Huntly advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield after winning 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Turriff United.

Huntly had Nathan Meres and Declan Milne back in the starting eleven in place of Paul Esslemont and Reece McKeown.

The woodwork denied the visitors after eight minutes when former Huntly forward Matthew McDonald struck the base of the post. Two minutes later, Huntly pushed forward on the counter attack and when Kai Ross burst into the opposition box, he unselfishly squared the ball to Ashley Ballam only for Fraser Hobday to turn the ball round the post.

In the sixteenth minute, Ross’ free kick picked out Ballam whose header was parried by Hobday as far as Logan Johnstone at the back post. It looked like Johnstone had opened the scoring with a low drive only for his effort to be flagged offside by Assistant Referee Dave McLaren.

Nathan Meres was denied by Hobday in the 21st minute while three minutes later, Meres turned provider for Glenn Murison who saw a shot turned around the post by his former team mate Hobday. Meres was a constant threat in the last third and came close to netting at the near post only for another stop from Hobday to keep the game goal-less.

Declan Milne got on the end of a Murison ball on the half-hour as Milne produced a great save from Hobday. Less than a minute later, Turriff took the lead. A mix-up between Bradley Manson and Euan Storrier saw the goalkeeper head the ball away outside his box and the ball was worked quickly by the opposition to Rory Brown who lobbed the keeper from around thirty yards.

In the 41st minutes, Kai Ross played a corner in low from the right and Logan Johnstone (above left) fired in to net his first goal for the club.

Glenn Murison fired low past the post in the 57 th minute while Matthew McDonald was blocked by Euan Storrier minutes later.

Midway through the half, Hobday dived low to turn a Nathan Meres shot away from goal before Ross Still fired wide from the rebound.

Two minutes into stoppage time, pulled off a block to keep out an effort from substitute Angus Grant to send the game to penalty kicks.

Full-Time: Huntly 1 Turriff United 1

Huntly Captain Ross Still was first up from the spot only to see his kick saved by Fraser Hobday. Robert Ward was next and fired low to the left to opening the scoring.

Kai Ross fired high inside the post before Keir Smith restored the lead to make it 1-2.

Paul Esslemont fired in a high shot for Huntly’s third before Adam Cross fired in low under Storrier to put Turriff back in the lead at 2-3.

Defender Ashley Ballam fired his penalty in off the bar before Angus Grant fired over to keep the score at 3-3.

Christopher Hay (right) sent Hobday the wrong way to put Huntly in front at 4-3 before Turriff Captain Cameron Bowden became the second away player to shoot over and hand the victory to Huntly.

The black and gold’s will now host Inverurie Loco Works in the Semi-Finals – date TBC.
