Fraser Hobday was a double winner at Sunday’s awards lunch picking up the Under 20s player of the year and the Huntly FC Young Player of the Year.

Having signed on a delayed transfer from Huntly Youth in December he stated that playing regularly in the Aberdeenshire League over the last two seasons has helped him make the step up into the Highland League.

“It’s a massive achievement for me and I’m very happy to win these two awards. Willie Irvine and the coaches with the under 19s and under 20s have pushed me and taught me everything they know and I’ve taken that on board and I’ve tried to put that into my game in order to progress and so far that’s helped me and I really have to thank them for everything they’ve done for me.”

Having debuted last in March last year as a trialist in a 7-3 defeat away to Turriff United he was called up to the first team once again in February and following the departure of Shaun Barney and when Richard Bowman was ruled out of a trip to Wick, the young Englishman was glad to take his chance.

“All it takes is a lucky break and when they come along you’ve got to take it and I have to thank Gregg Carrol for sticking with me. After some tough results like Clachnacuddin at home and Formartine away I thought my run in the team would be over but he’s kept faith in me. It’s up to me to keep that up when pre-season starts and keep my place.

Having only came in in February it’s been a real surprise for me that so many of my team mates have voted for me and it’s a big compliment and I’m proud that of that.”

Young players have had their chance this season with a number called up during 2013/14 and the 18 year old believes it looks good for the future with players coming through the ranks.

“I think the youth setup here at the club is on the best I’ve played with. There are a lot of players who are committed and want to learn and progress into the first team like me and Thomas Johnston have. They are really pushing and hopefully that could benefit the club in the future and help up move up the league.”
