Turriff United secured a comfortable 5-1 win over Huntly to send them to the top of the table on the opening day of the season.

rossjackUnited Manager Ross Jack was pleased with the result after a sticky start to the game.

He said: “We knew Huntly were a powerful side and would make it tough for us and they did early on but once we got the first goal we upped the tempo. We netted our first three goals within a twenty minute spell and we looked to be a bit more ruthless when we get in front and it was disappointing we couldn’t hold on for a clean sheet. We had a number of players missing for the game but those who did come into the team did well.”

greggcarrolIt was a fifth straight league defeat at The Haughs for Huntly as Manager Gregg Carrol was unhappy with the way his side defended.

Carrol said:” The defensive side of things was terrible, we got caught the wrong side of players, defended too deep and our ball retention wasn’t good enough. Our attacking play wasn’t that bad but the main problem is if you can’t defend it doesn’t count for anything.

When you think about the goals we lost, Turriff didn’t have to work hard to score them either but we looked slow and laboured in the backline and we need to sort that.  We’ll have some of the guys who were missing against Turriff back for the Cove game so that’ll give us options to change things about. Some players should be concerned about whether they’re going to be playing this season because with performances like that then some won’t be.

We know we can score goals but the problem is when you don’t shut the back door. It was schoolboy errors which disappoints me as bar the result against Alloa we’ve not had a bad pre-season when it comes to conceding goals and we need to have a look at that."
