Huntly did the double over Strathspey Thistle for the first time in four seasons with a comfortable 5-1 win.

With new Manager Charlie Charlesworth watching on from the stand and player-coach Gary McGowan starting a four game suspension, martincharlesworthMartin Charlesworth took charge in his first game since being promoted to player-coach and he was pleased to get off to a winning start in his new role.

He said: “Strathspey are a better team than the league table shows but for us it was a really good performance certainly in an attacking sense. Charlie would’ve been impressed with what he saw from the stand as there were a lot of good individual performances and we’ve still got a number of players to come back with McGowan, myself and Stillie. David Donald got the opener and I thought he was really good today and you can see the quality he’s got from higher levels.

We played in a slightly different way with Dennis Wyness partnering Michael Ewen up front and they did their bit with two goals each. In behind them we had Pele in central midfield and he’s been at a higher level too and has that experience and when you can play football through people like that it’ll give your strikers chances and we were able to take some of them.”

Speaking on the change of role recently, the former Deveronvale, Buckie Thistle and Lossiemouth forward said: “It’s difficult, I’ve had my opened this past week in what goes into planning for a game, training, keeping contact with the club. Charlie’s the manager but McGowan and I are in as player-coaches but Charlie has the knowledge but we’ll assist him and add a younger point of view if that helps.

We’re in good hands with Charlie, I’ve played under him twice, he got Deveronvale and Lossiemouth to their highest finish in quite some time and he’ll try to get the best out of every squad he works with.”

It was a thirteen successive league defeat for Strathspey with Assistant Manager strathspeythistleGordon Nicolson admitting conceding four goals inside a thirty minute spell was tough to come back from.

He said: “Up until the first goals there was nothing in the game but goals change games and there were some defensive mistakes as a team and we got punished.

We had a great chance cleared off the line at a goal down but it’s that old cliché that goals change games and it deflates you having lost another goal soon after that attempt off the line

The players battled away on a difficult pitch and fair play to Huntly for getting the game on. It probably wasn’t a great game to watch but it goes to show if you miss your chances you leave yourself wide open at the other end.

We’ve got a lot of good players, honest boys and the new signings like James Fraser and Craig Mainland have been positives for us. James is good on the ball going forward and Craig at the back gets stuck in and wins a lot of tackles.”

Right back daviddonaldDavid Donald had to wait ten months for his first Huntly goal but has now netted in our last two league matches. The former Peterhead and Formartine United defender spoke after the game as he was please to open his scoring account for the club after changes off the park in between the last two games.

“The situation with Tommy and Andy came as a shock to the players, things were going well but we’ve got Gaz and martin in now helping the new Manager (Charlie) and we showed a lot of promise in their first game to continue the good work.

It’s a long time since I’ve scored a goal let alone two; we played some good stuff on a difficult pitch which had a lot of snow and rain recently. It wasn’t the best of conditions but we played well.

There’s some good attacking players in the squad, Tom, Pele in midfield and Dennis and Mikey up top. Dennis brings something different to the table and whatever goes into him seems to stick and it’s brilliant to play with him."
