Huntly are still searching for their first league win at home to Formartine United after the two sides fought out a goal-less draw at Christie Park for the second successive season.

The black and gold’s had to do without defender Christopher Herd who dropped down to the bench after coming off injured in Saturday’s win over Wick Academy as Craig Dorrat returned. Formartine rang the changes following their Aberdeenshire Cup final defeat to Fraserburgh as Liam Strachan, Andrew Greig, Gary McGowan and Kevin Main all came into the starting eleven.

Huntly were forced into an early change when defender Craig Dorrat aggravated a knee injury and he was replaced by forward Paul Esslemont with Glenn Murison dropping back in at centre half.

Goalkeeper John Farquhar was kept busy in the early stages tipping over a Daniel Park shot in the 17th minute while five minutes later he denied Garry Wood with a point-blank stop.

On the half-hour mark, Liam Strachan picked up a booking for a foul on Kai Ross. Ross took the resultant free kick himself and delivered to Declan Milne whose shot was just over the bar.

A minute from the interval, Nathan Meres created an opening and played in Ross Still. Still cross to the back post for Paul Esslemont as the substitute fired over.

Half-Time: Huntly 0 Formartine United 0

Three minutes into the second half, Gary McGowan curled a shot over after a Kieran Lawrence throw was worked into the home goalmouth.

In the 59th minute, Assistant Referee Owen Lawrence had alerted Referee Will Smith to a foul by Liam Strachan on Nathan Meres. Strachan had already been cautioned and received a second reducing his side to ten men.

Despite being a man down, United came close to taking the lead two minutes later when a Michael Clark header was tipped over the bar by Farquhar. Two minutes later, Ross got the better of Lawrence out wide and his cross into the box saw Clark fail to clear as Meres got in a shot only to see his effort strike the base of the post. The rebound fell back to Meres who fired over on the follow-up.

Chances kept coming at both ends when Farquhar again denied Wood while Meres saw another chance blocked after he got on the end of another Ross cross.

Formartine missed a glorious chance to go ahead in the 73rd minute when Daniel Park’s delivery into the box saw Wood head wide unmarked.

Huntly had further chances within the last ten minutes Milne denied from close range by Kevin Main while Still saw a header off the line.

Formartine Assistant Manager Russell Anderson was red-card with six minutes for foul and abusive language while Huntly would finish the game with ten men when Captain Ross Still picked up a second caution following a late challenge on opposite number Graeme Rodger.
