Huntly secured their first win of the season following a 3-2 win over Wick Academy.

The hosts had Logan Johnstone completing a two game suspension while David Booth and Craig Dorrat missed out through injury as Christopher Hay was absent. Alexander Thoirs returned in defence while Declan Milne was back in attack after missing the Scottish Cup tie in Linlithgow due to a loan agreement. Wick made the trip south with a number of absentees as Danny MacKay, Alan Farquhar and Sam MacKay returned to the starting eleven.

Huntly threatened in the early stages and Declan Milne saw two shots off target in a matter of minutes early on.

With thirteen minutes gone, Ross Allan cautioned for a foul on Nathan Meres. Kai Ross swung the free kick in the ball was fumbled by Sean McCarthy and Ashley Ballam fired in low for his first Huntly goal.

In the 33rd minute, Alexander Thoirs was short with a pass-back and Craig Gunn got in behind to slot in at the near post.

Five minutes from the break, Alexander Thoirs saw a shot turned around the post by McCarthy for a corner. Kai Ross delivered again from a set piece and Ashley Ballam headed in at the near post for his second.

A ball out from the back saw Ballam play in Milne down the wing and when he crossed into Ross Still, the Huntly Captain’s right-footed shot was finger-tipped round the post. A minute later, Ross found the side-netting after a Glenn Murison cross was not cleared.

In stoppage time, Huntly winger Nathan Meres was floored following an elbow by Jack Halliday. The home side played on and the ball came loose to Glenn Murison who added a third with a low drive for his first of the season.

Half-Time: Huntly 3 Wick Academy 1

A minute into the half, the returning Christopher Herd gather the ball in the middle of the park and went on a lengthy run upfield only to roll a shot by the post.

Wick’s Richard Macadie missed a great chance to pull one back when he missed a sitter firing over at the back post eight minutes later. At the other end of the pitch, Meres evaded three challenges before crossing into the back post for Ross who headed wide. Ross would turn provider again moments later when he picked out Ballam from another corner but this time the header was off-target.

There was further controversy in the 69th minute when Macadie elbowed Herd in the head and was fortunate to escape any form of card. Referee Darren Munro did not deem the incident worthy of a foul and play restarted with a drop ball.

In the 73rd minute, the home defence were caught napping and Sam MacKay got by the keeper to roll in Wick’s second and ensure a nervy finish.

Huntly kept looking to add to their tally as Still curled wide from a Murison cross. The black and gold’s were forced into a change moments later when Christopher Herd came off injured to be replaced by Cory Ritchie who made his first competitive appearance at Christie Park since February 2018.

Veteran Goalkeeper kept his side in the game as he twice kept out Gary Manson late on. Declan Milne came close to adding his side’s fourth in stoppage time when his low shot was held by McCarthy.
