Linlithgow Rose made it seven Scottish Cup games unbeaten against Highland League opposition as a solitary Thomas Coyne goals gave the East of Scotland side a one-nil victory over Huntly.

The hosts made six changes to the side which defeat Gretna 2008 a week earlier while Huntly went into the game with a number of players missing. Loan signing Declan Milne was ineligible as Logan Johnstone started a two game suspension while Alexander Thoirs and Matthew McDonald were both unavailable. There was a further selection blow as defender Christopher Herd failed a fitness as Ashley Ballam was promoted from the bench.

Huntly threatened in the opening stages when stand-in Captain Ross Still fired over from an Ashley Ballam cross while five minutes the midfielder saw a shot blocked by Ross Barbour after he got on the end of a Kai Ross low cross.

A Ross Allum header looked goalbound in the nineteenth minute only for the returning Bradley Manson to head the ball off the line.

Goalkeeper John Farquhar kept up a run of impressive performances and prevented his side from conceding late on in the half when he turned Gary Thom header after the defender met an Owen Ronald corner.

Bradley Manson got forward in the 40th minute to create an opening for Paul Esslemont but the wide player was denied when Goalkeeper Michael McKinven stuck out a leg to turn the ball behind.

Chances were still coming at both ends when Ross Allum saw a shot tipped over the bar by Farquhar. In the final minute of the half, Kai Ross chipped the ball up and, on the turn, unleashed a volley which looked to be going into the near post only for McKinven to fingertip the ball round the post.

Half-Time: Linlithgow Rose 0 Huntly 0

Linlithgow’s Ross Allum passed up a hat-trick of chances within a three minute spell hitting two chances over the bar and another straight at Farquhar in the Huntly goal.

The woodwork denied the hosts in the 55th minute when Thom’s effort stuck the post.

The opening goal came in the 59th minute when Linlithgow were awarded a disputed corner kick. Owen Ronald floated the ball into the back post for Thomas Coyne to net with a downward header.

John Farquhar got caught out in the 67th minute and when Allum chipped a shot over the keeper it looked goalbound only for a last-ditch clearance from Ashley Ballam to keep his side in the game.

Two minutes later, Paul Esslemont saw a shot blocked after Reece McKeown teed up the forward.

Into stoppage time, Ross Still was elbowed in the head outside the home goalmouth. Referee William Wilson failed to give a foul but restart with a drop ball. Huntly contested the drop ball immediately and a powerful shot from Bradley Manson looked to going in only for McKinven to tip over the bar.

The black and gold’s threw everything up for the resultant corner kick including their goalkeeper, Ashley Ballam saw a header cleared behind while John Farquhar was off-target with a bicycle kick in the dying seconds.
