Two early headed goals helped Lowland League side Spartans through to the third round of the Scottish Cup with a two-nil win at Huntly.

Huntly were missing veteran forward Dennis Wyness as Neale Allan and Elliot Duff were both given starting places. Spartans started with seven of the side which had face Huntly last pre-season.

The Edinburgh side took the lead in the third minute when defender Paul Thomson rose to head from a free kick.

Three minutes later the visitors attacked again from a set piece and Christopher Townsley headed home.

Huntly started coming into the game late on in the first half. In the 35th minutes a speculative from Paul Napier went narrowly over the bar. With three minutes of the half remaining a low drive from Elliot Duff was turned behind courtesy of a fingertip save from Blair Carswell.

Half-Time: Huntly 0 Spartans 2

The visitors were still looking dangerous from set pieces with Paul Thomson and Daniel Ward coming close with headed efforts.

Stuart Grant denied Spartans a third with the best save of the match to keep out substitute jack Hay.

Huntly did have a claim for a penalty with six minutes to go when a Joe Burr header was handled at the near post but Referee Peter Stuart ignored the claims.

With three minutes to go Blair Johnston denied opposite number Jack Hay with a last ditch tackle while a minute later Neale Allan cleared a Broque Watson goalbound shot over the bar.
